Scanning Documents with Your Smartphone or Tablet

Joist creates and sends professional-looking invoices, keeping them organized in one centralized app on your smartphone or tablet.  Do you find yourself wishing that you could keep records of paper documents on your device just as easily?  Here are some tips on using your smartphone or tablet to scan and store paper documents.

Using Your Device to Scan Documents

Traditional document scanners are large, clunky and virtually impossible to use on the go.  Luckily they are no longer needed – as long as you have a smartphone or tablet with a camera handy.  With good lighting on a flat surface, a smartphone camera can reliably photograph most papers including receipts, sketches, blueprints, permits and other important documents.  Having all your essential docs close at hand for your reference can save you time, and help you stay on top of your project’s paper trail.

Documents can be “scanned” into your phone and organized into albums.

Document images can be organized into Albums in your device’s Photos application.  To create a new album click on the “+” on the upper left corner of the Albums window in your Photos app.  Keeping a digital reference of important documents is a good way to avoid losing or misplacing key slips.

Sharing Images

Scanned documents can be sent in an email attachment, or posted online for other project members to access – cutting down on the amount of times you have to print and carry paper documents to and from the worksite.  Dropbox and Google Drive both provide secure document sharing services that are ideal for this type of usage.

More Advanced Options

Do you need to scan a multi-page document, or merge two scans into the same file for a project?  For these and more advanced options, try a scanning application.  There are many free and paid options available in the app store.
